Point Montara Lighthouse is an original watercolor and ink painting by Mike Robles. It was painted on a Strathmore Aquarius II WC paper print of a NOAA Nautical Chart portion of the California Coast. The Location of the lighthouse is marked on the chart. Only archival paints, inks and materials were used.
The Point Montara Lighthouse is in Montara, California on the Pacific coast approximately 25 miles south of San Francisco. It was established in February 1875. It originally had a kerosene lantern, but was upgraded in 1912 to a fourth order Fresnel lens. The current tower was first erected in 1881 in Wellfleet, Massachusetts as the Mayo Beach Lighthouse. In 1925, the cast iron tower from the discontinued Mayo Beach Light was disassembled, moved and rebuilt as the Point Montara Light station in 1928, where it stands today. About the Artist, Mike Robles I am a senior artist and a native Californian. I was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and graduated from Carlmont High School, Belmont in 1958. I graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 1963 with a BS in Physical Sciences. One week after graduating, I married Jane and this year we’ll be celebrating our 50th anniversary. My career as an analytical chemist for GE Nuclear Energy started in 1963 at the Hanford Engineering Works in Eastern Washington. In 1969, my family (wife and two sons) and I moved back to California and settled in Livermore. I continued working for GE for most of my 40 year career.
